Adults Who Feel Empowered

Summary: A majority of residents (67%) say they know how to make a difference in their community. But other residents have come out of Covid-19 feeling less connected and unsure about how to get involved than before the pandemic. As a community, we can do more to ensure all residents know how to share their voices on what matters to them.

Details: This statistic reflects how adults answered the question “Other than voting, do you feel that if you wanted to, you could have a say about the way things are run in this community?” Statistics are from the City of Red Wing’s Community Survey, which is done every few years to take the pulse of community opinion on a range of topics. This professional survey gathers input from a statistically significant percentage of people who are reflective of our town based on our census demographics. All respondents were 19 years or older.

Local Elected Officials - By Gender

Summary: Red Wing elects seven City Council members and one Mayor. In 2023, the City Council has four male and three female members, and one male Mayor. City Council members vote on policies, budgets, and the overall vision of the city. Red Wing has a “weak mayoral system” so the Mayor does not vote on items but has veto power over ordinances (laws) and resolutions and recommends residents for all boards and commissions.

Details: Elected leaders include the seven City Council members and Mayor. The City’s 100+ board and commission members are volunteers (not elected) who are recommended by the Mayor and approved by City Council.
